The earliest model had already been established by SixDegrees in 1997 built around real-world relationships. Early online communities from the 1990s were converging toward social networks that let users connect through friends and co-workers.
The Millennium Calendar was a European Schools project introduced at the ESP conference in Tartu, Estonia, March 1999. It was designed as a platform for students to engage in meaningful discussions about their aspirations and the changes they hoped to see in the world. The Millennium Calendar was designed and hosted on Wordskills.com in the style of an electronic advent calendar opening on each day with a new entry containing a school's contribution leading up to the new millennium on January 1, 2000.
